We sat down with W. Grant Stevens, MD, F.A.C.S., OrangeTwist co-founder and a world-renowned plastic surgeon. (He’s also a personal devotee of Alastin products, as you’ll see.)

Question: OrangeTwist is very selective about the products it uses. Tell us how Alastin made the cut.

Dr. Stevens: The unique TriHex peptide actually penetrates the skin and makes biological changes in what’s called the extracellular matrix—the space in between the cells—and that’s why Alastin is different. (A peptide is a short-chain of amino acids.) Most skincare is primarily topical and does not actually penetrate the skin. Over time our skin sags because the collagen and elastin deteriorate—think of it like an old rubber band that no longer has the same recoil properties as it did when it was new. I’ve done numerous scientific studies on the Alastin products, and I was immediately struck by the change in the extracellular matrix. It’s biologically active. It’s what makes skin thick and pump and healthy.

No other line has the same ability to penetrate the extracellular matrix. It’s revolutionary.

Q: How do Alastin products work in concert with everything else happening at OrangeTwist?

Dr. Stevens: The properties in Alastin products help facilitate the skin’s natural healing processes. We use Skin Nectar for two weeks of preparation and two weeks of recovery from a treatment. Then we shift patients to the restorative Skin Complex once or twice a day, because the TriHex peptides improve the skin’s thickness, its collagen and elastin. It also has special antioxidants and evens skin tone. We have the Restorative Eye Treatment, to reduce the appearances of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. We also love the Restorative Neck Complex, which is very helpful for patients who have had any kind of treatments around that area. It doesn’t sting or burn, which can be an issue for some patients after a procedure. We’ve been using the body lotion on people immediately following their CoolSculpting and then suggesting they use it twice a day on their arms, their thighs, their buttocks, their tummies—any area where they want the skin to be tighter and where they’ve reduced it with the CoolCculpting. It’s a wonderful body lotion.

Q: Tell me about some of your personal favorites.

Try the HydraTint Pro Mineral Sunscreen. I’m a native Californian, a beach guy, and I’ve been through a lot of sunscreens. But when I tried the HydraTint Pro Mineral on my skin, I thought, “This feels amazing, not like sunscreen.” The mystery about this product is how people of all shades can wear it. A lot of women are wearing it as their foundation now because it has a lighter base. I still can’t figure that out—how did they make this a universal shade with coverage for every skin tone?

I’m addicted to the Skin Nectar. I was in Dallas one morning and realized I’d forgotten it. I ran into our OrangeTwist office and saw we had it there. I said, “My face is so dry, it’s going to fall off. I’ve got to have Nectar!” And that’s actually when I realized that I was hooked on it. I’ve even warned people that if they start using it, they’ll never want to stop.
