Men: Love The Skin You’re In

The metrosexual, with his moisturizing and manscaping, first showed up 25 years ago as a small but notable (David Beckham, anyone?) part of the male population. In 2019 skincare is for #yesallmen, not just Posh Spice’s hubby. From cleansing to wrinkle prevention to age-reversing treatments, there are more opportunities than ever for men to take charge of their skincare. OrangeTwist Nurse Practitioner Heather Finks gives pointers on what men need when it comes to skincare and anti-aging treatments.

How do men’s skin—and skincare needs—differ from women?

Guys are a little more blessed than we women are in the skin department. Their skin is 25% thicker than women’s with a higher percentage of collagen. While women’s skin thins out drastically after menopause, men have a much more gradual decline. However, they do produce more sebum, thanks to testosterone, so men are more prone to breakouts and blackheads.

I don’t think anyone’s too young to take care of his skin, but by your 30s, everyone should be paying more attention to skincare.

What’s a good skincare regime for men?

The biggest obstacle for men and skincare is their preference for doing everything the simplest way possible! At home, they should be cleansing twice a day, moisturizing and using retinol and sunscreen for aging prevention. Keep an eye on shaving, too. Not too close of a shave and not too hot with the water, both of which dry out the skin.

Try Alastin gentle cleanser, which removes oil and impurities without stripping the skin. Follow with Alastin Nourishing Moisturizer and top with Alastin Broad Spectrum SPF 30+ Sunscreen. At night, use Alastin Renewal Retinol for proven wrinkle prevention and reversal.

What kind of treatments work well for men?

Botox and fillers are the first line of treatment for men, just like they are for women. Botox not only treats wrinkles but also prevents them. Men do require a higher unit of Botox because of the thickness of their skin. They tend to have deeper folds of wrinkles, so the goal is to soften those folds, rather than completely eliminate them. When it comes to fillers, we want to focus on filling the mid-face and keeping a strong jawline. Placement is extremely important, because an injector who is unfamiliar with treating men can, unfortunately, “feminize” a face. Male and female facial anatomy is different and requires a very skilled injector.

Any treatments that specifically address men’s skin issues?

Guys definitely have more issues with skin texture and larger pores. Vivace is great for that. The microneedling treatment with radio frequency reduces fine lines and stimulates collagen production.

HydraFacials are also amazing for clean pores. Guys tend to get grimier than women, so they can use some next-level cleansing. (The HydraFacial combines cleansing and peel, extraction and hydration and fuse and protects while delivering antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and other essential nutrients.)

For skin laxity, everyone should be doing Ultherapy. If all my patients would have an Ultherapy treatment every other year, my job would be so much easier! Ultherapy is even better when you start in your early 30s. The treatment regenerates the collagen you already have, so the younger you are, the more collagen you regenerate. Translation: You look younger for longer!

What about body treatments?

CoolSculpting is the go-to when it comes to fat removal right now. Men generally want to treat their abs and flanks. (Women want to treat everything!) With CoolSculpting, 25% of fat cells are permanently destroyed with each treatment. Two sessions will generally knock out all the fat you want. But remember that the best candidate for CoolSculpting is someone who’s physically active with a healthy lifestyle who just can’t get rid of stubborn areas of fat. It won’t be as effective for someone who is overweight.

To get that six-pack, we have a new treatment called CoolTone. It increases muscle mass and tones underlying muscle fibers via magnetic muscle stimulation.

As always, the most important choice to make when it comes to skin and body treatments is the clinic and practitioner. At OrangeTwist, experienced medical experts will make sure you get the treatment—whether it’s a skincare regimen or a non-invasive laser—that’s tailored to your specific needs. Schedule a complimentary consultation at the OrangeTwist location nearest you—and ask about the Man Cave for all the same great treatments in a dude-friendly environment. (Metrosexuality not required!)
