Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do, What to Avoid, and What to Expect

Getting through the session is the easy part. What you do in the hours and days after laser hair removal, and between sessions affects how comfortable the treatment is, how well the results hold, and whether complications are avoided. Here is a straightforward guide.

Key takeaways

  • Immediately after treatment, the skin in the treated area is mildly sensitized. Redness and a warm sensation like a mild sunburn are normal and typically resolve within a few hours.
  • Shedding not regrowth happens over the two to three weeks following each session. Treated hairs fall out as the follicle processes the damage. This is normal and expected.
  • Sun protection is non-negotiable between sessions. Treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, and in Reno’s high-altitude environment, unprotected sun exposure significantly increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and adverse reaction.
  • Heat and friction should be avoided for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. This includes hot showers, saunas, intense exercise, and tight clothing over treated areas.
  • Shaving is fine between sessions. Waxing, threading, and plucking are not, they remove the follicle that needs to be present for the laser to target.

Immediately after treatment (0 to 4 hours)

The treated area typically feels warm and may look pink or mildly red similar to a light sunburn. This is expected. A cold compress or cool cloth can soothe discomfort. Aloe vera gel can help calm the skin.

  • Apply cool compresses or aloe if needed for comfort.
  • Avoid touching the treated area unnecessarily.
  • Wear loose, non-restrictive clothing over treated areas.
  • Avoid heat: hot showers, hot baths, steam rooms, saunas.
  • Skip intense exercise; sweating can irritate sensitized skin.
  • Use SPF on any treated areas exposed to the sun, even briefly.

Days 1 to 3

Sensitivity continues to fade over the first few days. Some clients experience small bumps or follicular edema (tiny raised dots around each follicle), this is normal and resolves on its own. Avoid anything that could irritate or heat the skin during this window.

  • Continue gentle cleansing with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs), and active skincare products for 48 to 72 hours.
  • No waxing, threading, plucking, or depilatory creams in the treated area.
  • Shaving is fine, it does not interfere with the treatment process.
  • Sunscreen on all treated areas, SPF 30 or higher. In Reno’s high-UV environment, this is especially critical.

What shedding looks like and why it happens

Starting around 5 to 14 days after treatment, you may notice what looks like stubble appearing in the treated area. This is not regrowth, it is the treated hair shafts being pushed out of the follicle as the body processes the damage from the laser. It can look exactly like the hair is growing back, but gently dragging a warm wet cloth across the area will usually cause the shed hairs to release.

This shedding phase is a sign the treatment worked on those follicles. Not all follicles are in the active growth phase at each session, which is why multiple sessions are needed. Laser Hair Removal is only effective on follicles in the anagen (active growth) phase.

The Reno sun exposure factor

At 4,500 feet, UV radiation in Reno is roughly 15 to 20 percent more intense than at sea level. This matters especially for LHR clients, because treated skin is more UV-sensitive during the course of the treatment series. Unprotected sun exposure between sessions, especially a tan increases the risk of hyperpigmentation (darkening) and can interfere with the effectiveness of subsequent sessions, since the laser calibration is affected by skin tone.

Your provider will ask about recent sun exposure at the start of each session. If you have developed a tan, the session may need to be postponed. Using a physical SPF daily between sessions is the simplest way to avoid this issue, and it protects the investment you are making in the treatment series.

What is normal vs. when to contact your provider

Normal after LHR:

  • Redness and warmth for a few hours after treatment
  • Small follicular bumps (follicular edema) that resolve within 1 to 3 days
  • Shedding of treated hairs 5 to 14 days after treatment
  • Mild dryness in the treated area

Contact your provider if you notice:

  • Blistering or significant swelling that does not resolve within 24 to 48 hours
  • Crusting or open skin in the treated area
  • Significant darkening or lightening of the skin that persists beyond a few weeks
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, or discharge

How our Reno team approaches LHR aftercare

After each session at OrangeTwist Reno, your provider walks you through what to expect in the days following treatment and answers any questions before you leave. Aftercare guidance is part of every session, not an afterthought. If you notice anything unusual between sessions, the team is reachable by phone or email.

LHR Aftercare: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, shaving is fine between sessions and does not interfere with the treatment. Waxing, threading, plucking, and depilatory creams are not allowed between sessions because they remove the follicle the laser needs to target.

Mild redness typically resolves within a few hours. Some clients experience redness for up to 24 hours in more sensitive areas. Significant redness beyond 24 hours is uncommon and worth checking in with your provider.

What looks like hair growing back is usually the treated hair shafts shedding, being pushed out of the follicle. This happens over two to three weeks following each session and is a normal sign that the treatment worked on those follicles.

You should avoid direct sun exposure on treated areas for at least two weeks after each session, and use SPF 30 or higher throughout the treatment series. This is especially important in Reno’s high-altitude, high-UV environment.

Most clients need six to eight sessions for significant, long-lasting reduction. Sessions are spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the treatment area and your hair growth cycle. Your provider maps the plan at the You Review.
