About the treatment

Light Does the Heavy Lifting
Light-based treatments work below the surface to target the pigment, redness, and texture issues that topical skincare alone cannot reach. Whether your concern is sun spots, visible capillaries, or uneven skin tone, your provider will recommend the right wavelength for the job.
- Targets sun damage and pigment
- Calms redness and capillaries
- Smoother, more even tone
What are laser and IPL treatments and how do they work?
Laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments deliver controlled light energy into the skin. The light is absorbed selectively by pigment (melanin) or oxygenated blood (in vascular concerns), then converted to heat that breaks down the target without damaging surrounding tissue. The body clears the debris naturally over the following days and weeks.
Different light technologies are designed for different jobs. IPL and BBL (BroadBand Light) use a range of wavelengths well-suited to surface pigmentation and redness. Q-switched and picosecond lasers target deeper pigment with shorter, more precise pulses. Fractional resurfacing lasers create controlled micro-channels in the skin to trigger collagen remodeling for texture and fine lines.
At OrangeTwist, your provider will assess your skin tone, your specific concern, and your downtime tolerance, then recommend the right platform. Some concerns benefit from a single technology over a course. Others benefit from a combination across multiple sessions.

The OrangeTwist Difference
Every laser and IPL session is performed by a licensed provider trained on the specific device platforms in your local Treatment Shop and supervised by our Medical Advisory Board.
Light-based treatments are not one-size-fits-all. Wavelength, fluence, and protocol are calibrated to your skin tone and concern at every session. Your provider will adjust as your skin responds.
Light treatments work in courses. OrangeTwist prices packages that reflect the realistic number of sessions, with TwistUp member benefits across every visit.
Bright, welcoming, and run by people who genuinely care about your experience. Nothing like a clinical environment.

Your Treatment Timeline

You Review
Your provider will assess your skin tone, examine the concern you want to address, and recommend the right light-based platform and session count. They will walk through realistic timing, pricing, and downtime expectations before anything is booked.

Onboarding
Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for two to four weeks before your session. Stop retinoids and active exfoliants five to seven days before. Let your provider know about any photosensitizing medications or recent cosmetic treatments. Come in with a clean face and no makeup.

Ongoing Care
Your provider will apply a cool gel or chilled tip, then pass the device handpiece over the treatment area. Each pulse feels like a quick warm snap, at the spicier end of the menu for IPL and BBL, more intense for fractional resurfacing. Topical numbing is available for sensitive areas and stronger treatments.

Maintenance and Transition
Expect redness and warmth similar to mild sunburn for a few hours to a few days, depending on the treatment. Pigmented spots may darken and flake off naturally over the following week. Apply SPF 30 or higher every day. Avoid hot showers, saunas, and direct sun for 48 hours. Your provider will share specific aftercare for your device and treatment.
Cleaner tone, treatment by treatment.
Most laser and IPL treatments deliver visible improvement after a single session, with best results building across a course. Pigmentation typically darkens before flaking away within seven to 10 days, revealing clearer skin underneath. Vascular concerns fade gradually as treated capillaries are reabsorbed.
A typical course runs four to six sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart. Results last six to 12 months on average, with annual maintenance recommended for sustained improvement. Sun protection between sessions is essential. Without it, results undo themselves.

Frequently Asked
Questions and Answers
Laser uses a single, focused wavelength of light. IPL (intense pulsed light) uses a broader range of wavelengths in each pulse. Lasers are typically used for more targeted or deeper concerns. IPL is well-suited to surface pigmentation, redness, and general tone correction. Your provider will recommend the right one for your concern.
BBL (BroadBand Light) is a brand of IPL technology made by Sciton. It is one of the most established and widely used IPL platforms in aesthetic medicine. The treatment principle is the same as standard IPL with a refined delivery system.
Laser skin resurfacing uses fractional or ablative laser technology to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. The body responds by producing new collagen and replacing damaged surface tissue. It is one of the most effective treatments for textural concerns, acne scars, and fine lines, with more downtime than IPL.
Photofacial is a common term for an IPL or BBL treatment focused on the face. The treatment uses pulsed light to address sun damage, pigmentation, redness, and general tone correction in a single session, with minimal downtime.
Common concerns include sun damage, freckles and age spots, melasma, rosacea and redness, broken capillaries, uneven skin tone, dullness, fine lines, and certain types of acne scarring. Your provider will assess which technology suits your specific concern at your You Review.
IPL can help with some forms of melasma but is not universally suitable. Melasma can sometimes worsen with light-based treatment, particularly in darker skin tones. Your provider will assess your specific case carefully and may recommend topical or alternative approaches first.
Yes. Light-based treatments are calibrated to your skin tone and specific concern, which means a thorough assessment is essential. Every OrangeTwist client starts with a complimentary You Review.
Let your provider know about any photosensitizing medications (including antibiotics, retinoids, isotretinoin), recent sun exposure, current skincare routine, history of cold sores or rosacea flares, pigmentation conditions, and any previous laser or IPL treatments.
Yes. Some older laser and IPL platforms are not safe for darker skin tones. Modern devices and protocols can safely treat a wider range of skin tones, but the technology and settings have to be carefully matched. Your provider will assess your specific phototype at your You Review and recommend only what is safe for your skin.
Pricing depends on the device, the area treated, and the number of sessions. Because light-based treatments deliver best results across a course, OrangeTwist prices packages of sessions. Your provider will walk through exact pricing at your You Review.
Most IPL and BBL sessions take 20 to 30 minutes. Fractional resurfacing or larger treatment areas can take up to 60 minutes. Topical numbing adds an additional 20 to 30 minutes when used.
Most concerns benefit from a course of four to six sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart. Some clients see meaningful results after a single session for surface concerns. Your provider will recommend a realistic course at your You Review.
Yes. TwistUp membership includes exclusive pricing on light-based treatment packages, plus TwistMode points on every session.
Some visible improvement is common after the first session, especially for surface pigmentation. Pigmented spots typically darken before flaking off within seven to 10 days. Vascular concerns fade gradually over weeks. Best results build across the full course.
Results typically last six to 12 months. Annual maintenance sessions keep improvements consistent. Sun protection between sessions and after the course is essential.
Treated pigmentation does not regenerate, but new pigmentation can form with continued sun exposure or hormonal changes. Daily SPF 30 or higher and annual maintenance sessions are the best ways to keep results consistent.
Most clients describe IPL and BBL pulses as a quick warm snap, the spicier end of the menu but easily manageable. Fractional resurfacing is more intense and typically requires topical numbing. Your provider will offer numbing where appropriate and adjust pace to your comfort.
Most clients see mild redness and warmth for a few hours after IPL or BBL. Pigmented spots may darken visibly over the following days before flaking off. Most clients return to normal activities immediately, sometimes with mineral makeup to cover residual pinkness.
Fractional resurfacing involves more visible recovery, typically three to seven days of redness, swelling, and pinpoint scabbing as the skin renews. Your provider will walk through realistic downtime for the specific device at your You Review.
Avoid sun exposure, hot showers, saunas, intense workouts, and active skincare ingredients (retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C) for at least 48 hours. Apply SPF 30 or higher every day for the duration of your course and beyond.
Yes, when performed by trained providers on properly calibrated devices. The most common complications come from miscalibration or use on inappropriate skin tones. OrangeTwist’s protocols include comprehensive skin assessment at every session.
Light-based treatments are generally not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active sun tan, sunburn, or recent self-tanner, are taking photosensitizing medications such as isotretinoin, have a history of keloid scarring, or have an active skin infection in the treatment area. Always disclose your full medication and health history at your You Review.
Some IPL platforms are not safe for darker skin tones because the device cannot distinguish well between pigment in the lesion and pigment in surrounding skin. OrangeTwist providers will assess your phototype carefully and recommend only the technology safe for your skin. If IPL is not appropriate, alternative approaches such as chemical peels, microneedling, or different laser wavelengths may be recommended.
Common side effects include redness, mild swelling, and temporary pigmentation changes during the healing window. Rare side effects include blistering, scarring, or persistent pigment changes, which is why provider training and device calibration matter. Your provider will walk through risks specific to your treatment at your You Review.
Light-based treatments are not recommended on tanned skin or skin that will be actively sun-exposed. Many clients choose to do their course in cooler months and maintain with mineral SPF year-round. Your provider will recommend timing at your You Review.
