CoolSculpting

The leading brand of cryolipolysis, a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to freeze and permanently destroy fat cells in targeted areas of the body without surgery or downtime.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a brand name for cryolipolysis, a non-surgical fat reduction treatment developed by Allergan Aesthetics. It is the most widely recognised and extensively researched platform in the fat freezing category. The treatment uses controlled cooling delivered through applicators placed on the skin surface to lower the temperature of the underlying fat tissue to a point where fat cells are damaged and begin to die, while leaving the overlying skin and surrounding tissue largely unaffected.

The scientific basis for cryolipolysis is the observation that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than the surrounding tissue. At temperatures that the skin and muscle can tolerate without damage, fat cells undergo a process of cell death. The body then gradually clears the dead fat cells through its natural waste removal processes over the following weeks and months, producing a visible reduction in the treated fat deposit that is apparent from around four to twelve weeks after treatment.

CoolSculpting is used on a range of body areas where stubborn localised fat deposits are a concern, including the abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, beneath the chin, the bra area, the back, and beneath the buttocks. Different applicator shapes and sizes are available for different areas, and the CoolSculpting Elite platform, a newer iteration of the device, allows two applicators to be used simultaneously to treat multiple areas in a single session.

What to Expect

Before treatment the provider marks the area and selects the appropriate applicator. A gel pad is placed on the skin to protect it and the applicator is applied, drawing the tissue into the cooling chamber through suction. The initial sensation is intense cold and pressure as the tissue is cooled, which typically transitions to numbness within a few minutes as the area loses sensation.

Each treatment cycle lasts approximately 35 to 60 minutes depending on the applicator used. At the end of the cycle the applicator is removed and the treated area is massaged firmly for two minutes. This massage step, while briefly uncomfortable as sensation returns to the numbed tissue, is an important part of the protocol and has been shown to improve the extent of fat reduction compared to no massage.

After treatment, the area typically looks red and feels numb, sore, and firm for several days. Temporary side effects including redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, cramping, itching, and skin sensitivity are common and resolve over days to weeks. There is no significant downtime and most people return to normal activities the same day.

Who It’s For and Results

CoolSculpting is best suited to those at or near a healthy weight who have specific localised fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss treatment and is not designed to address large volumes of fat or obesity. The best results come from treating well-defined, pinchable fat deposits in people whose overall body composition is already broadly healthy.

Results develop gradually over four to twelve weeks as the body processes and eliminates the destroyed fat cells. Most people see a meaningful reduction in the treated area, with clinical studies showing an average of around 20 to 25 percent reduction in fat thickness in the treated zone following a single cycle. Some areas or individuals benefit from additional treatment cycles for a more complete result.

The fat cells destroyed by CoolSculpting are permanently eliminated. They do not regenerate. However, remaining fat cells in the area and throughout the body can expand with weight gain, so maintaining a stable weight after treatment is important for preserving the result long term.

Frequently Asked Questions: CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is the most widely known brand of fat freezing, which is the common term for cryolipolysis. All CoolSculpting treatments are fat freezing treatments, but fat freezing as a treatment category includes other brands and devices that use the same cryolipolysis principle. CoolSculpting is distinguished by its specific device technology, the breadth of its clinical research base, and its regulatory approvals across multiple body areas. When someone asks about fat freezing, they are often asking about CoolSculpting specifically, though the treatment principle is shared with other platforms.

This depends on the area being treated, the size of the fat deposit, and the degree of reduction desired. Some people achieve a satisfying result from a single treatment cycle per area. Others with larger deposits or wanting more significant reduction benefit from a second cycle in the same area, typically performed eight to twelve weeks after the first once the initial results have fully developed. A provider will assess the area and recommend the appropriate number of cycles based on the individual anatomy and goals.

CoolSculpting has a well-established safety profile for the body areas it is approved for. Common temporary side effects including redness, bruising, swelling, numbness, and tenderness in the treated area are expected and resolve within days to weeks. A rare complication called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia has been documented, in which the treated fat paradoxically increases in volume rather than decreasing. This occurs in a small proportion of cases and is more common in male patients. It does not resolve on its own and typically requires surgical correction. While uncommon, it is an important risk to be aware of and discuss with a provider before treatment.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat through suction, producing immediate and significant results in a single procedure. It requires anaesthesia, involves a recovery period, and can address larger volumes of fat than CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is non-surgical, involves no recovery time, and produces gradual results over several weeks, but is limited in the volume of fat it can address and requires multiple sessions for more significant reduction. For those wanting the most dramatic possible result or dealing with larger fat volumes, liposuction is more appropriate. For those wanting meaningful improvement in a specific localised deposit without surgery, CoolSculpting is a well-proven alternative.
