Microneedling in Houston: To PRP or Not to PRP
Your skin, prompted to do its own repair work.
Table of Contents
Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for texture, scarring, and tired-looking skin, because it puts your own collagen to work. The common question is whether to add PRP. This guide explains how microneedling works, when PRP is worth it, what results and downtime look like, and what to expect at our Houston center, where we use the SkinPen device.
Key takeaways
- Microneedling in Houston creates tiny channels that prompt new collagen, improving texture and softening scarring, large pores, and fine lines.
- Adding PRP, made from your own blood, can strengthen the result and is often chosen for acne scarring.
- Most clients do three to four sessions about four weeks apart, with short redness as the only downtime.
- At OrangeTwist Houston, microneedling uses the SkinPen device and is performed by a licensed provider.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling uses ultra fine needles to create tiny channels in the skin, these small injuries to the skin triggers new collagen growth as the skin repairs itself from within. At our Houston OrangeTwist center, clients choose it to improve texture, soften scarring and large pores, and refresh dull skin. Adding PRP, drawn from your own blood, can improve the result for the right candidate.

How microneedling works
A microneedling device (we love SkinPen) with very fine needles makes a series of tiny, controlled channels in the surface of the skin. Your body treats these as small repair jobs and responds by producing fresh collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and smooth. Over the following weeks, that new collagen improves texture and softens the look of scars and lines.
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, takes it a step further. Your provider draws a small sample of your blood, spins it to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, and applies the solution during the treatment. This adds additional growth factors to support healing and can boost the collagen response, which is why PRP is often added for concerns which include scarring.
Who is suitable for Microneedling?
Microneedling suits a broad range of clients and skin tones, with a few exceptions.
- Clients with acne scarring or uneven texture
- Enlarged-looking pores and early fine lines
- Dull skin that would benefit from a collagen refresh
- People who want results that build naturally over a course of sessions
It may not be right if:
- You have an active breakout or skin infection in the area
- You have certain skin conditions or healing issues, which your provider will screen for
- You are pregnant, in which case PRP in particular is deferred
- You need a single dramatic result overnight, since this builds gradually
Microneedling compared with Clear and Brilliant
Both improve texture and refresh the skin, but they work differently. Microneedling is mechanical and strong for scarring; Clear and Brilliant, also offered in Houston, is a gentle laser for tone and brightness.
| Microneedling | Clear and Brilliant | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Fine needles drive collagen | Gentle laser resurfacing |
| Best for | Acne scarring, texture | Tone, brightness, early aging |
| Downtime | 1 to 2 days of redness | About a day of redness |
| Sessions | Often 3 to 4 | Often a short series |
Results and treatment timeline
Improvement builds over time as new collagen forms. You will see fresher skin within a couple of weeks of a session, with texture and scarring continuing to improve across a course. Most clients do three to four sessions, about four weeks apart.
Downtime is short. Expect redness like a mild sunburn for one to two days, sometimes with light flaking. Sun protection afterward is important, since the skin is renewing. PRP can mean slightly more initial redness in exchange for a stronger healing response.

Microneedling in Houston: your questions
Microneedling creates tiny, controlled channels in the skin that prompt your body to make new collagen as it heals. Over a few weeks that can soften the look of scarring, large pores, and fine lines, and improve overall texture. It suits most skin types and tones.
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, drawn from a small sample of your own blood and applied during microneedling. The growth factors in it can support healing and boost the collagen response. Many clients add PRP for acne scarring, and your provider will advise whether it is worth it for you.
It is very manageable. Your provider applies a numbing cream first, so most clients feel light pressure or vibration rather than pain. The area can feel warm afterward, a bit like mild sunburn, for a day or so.
Most clients do a course of three to four sessions, spaced about four weeks apart, then maintain with occasional top-ups. Scarring usually needs the full course to show its best result. Your provider sets the plan at your You Review.
Your provider confirms the cost and whether a course makes sense at your complimentary You Review.
Usually short. Expect redness like a mild sunburn for one to two days, sometimes with light dryness or flaking as the skin renews. Most clients return to normal activity the next day, with sunscreen on.
The Bottomline
Microneedling improves texture and softens scarring by prompting your own collagen, and PRP can strengthen that for the right candidate, with the call made honestly at our Houston center. The next step is a complimentary You Review, where Simone assesses your skin and recommends microneedling with or without PRP based on your goal.
