Botox and filler for beginners: What to know before your first visit

If you’re considering Botox or filler for the first time, it’s normal to have questions. What do they actually do? What’s the difference between them? Will the results look natural? And what happens at your first appointment?

The good news is that modern injectable treatments are far more personalised than many people realise. Before you book, it helps to understand how Botox and filler work, what they can realistically achieve, and what to expect from your first consultation. So, let’s get right into it:

What Botox and filler actually do (and what they don’t)

These two treatments get grouped together because they’re both injectables, but they do very different things. Understanding the difference before your first visit means you walk in with the right expectations and walk out with results you actually wanted.

Botox: relaxing the muscle, softening the line

Botox Cosmetic is an FDA-approved injectable made from botulinum toxin type A. It works by temporarily blocking the signal that tells specific facial muscles to contract. When those muscles ease up, the skin above them softens and the expression lines they’ve been creating (forehead creases, frown lines, crow’s feet) become noticeably less visible.

Rather than changing your features, Botox works by reducing the muscle activity that contributes to expression lines over time. Results develop over three to seven days, settle fully at around two weeks, and typically last three to four months. Nothing about it is permanent, which is exactly what makes it controllable.

Filler: restoring volume, refining shape

Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid gels (a substance your body already produces naturally) injected beneath the skin to add volume, restore structure, or refine a specific feature. Lip filler adds shape and definition. Cheek filler rebuilds mid-face volume that softens as we age. Jawline and chin filler sharpen the lower face.

Unlike Botox, which targets muscle movement, filler addresses areas where volume has been lost or where a small amount of strategic volume creates a more balanced result. Results are visible immediately and typically last six to eighteen months depending on the area and the product used. Hyaluronic acid fillers are also reversible. OrangeTwist providers keep hyaluronidase on-site, so that reversibility is real, not theoretical.

Things to consider before you book

First-time clients often arrive with a vague idea that they want ‘something done.’ That’s fine  –  but arriving with a bit more clarity makes your consultation more productive and your first visit more satisfying. Two things worth thinking through before you pick up the phone.

Your goals

The most useful thing you can bring to a You Review is a specific preference, not a picture of someone else’s face. ‘I want my forehead lines to look softer in photos’ is a goal. ‘I want to look like her’ is a direction your provider can’t actually follow – because treatments need to be tailored to your own anatomy and facial proportions. Think about what specifically bothers you or what you’d like to feel more confident about. That’s the conversation your provider is trained to have with you.

Your timeline  (events, recovery, photos)

Timing matters more for filler than for Botox. If you have a wedding, reunion, or any significant event coming up, leave at least two weeks after a filler treatment so any swelling has fully settled. For Botox, two weeks is also the window for results to fully develop, so don’t schedule your treatment the week before anything important. As a rule of thumb: two weeks minimum between injectables and any event where photos matter. If you’re considering combining both treatments, mention your timeline at your You Review and your provider will sequence things accordingly.

The You Review: What your first consultation looks like

Every OrangeTwist visit starts with a You Review; a complimentary, no-pressure consultation with a licensed provider before anything is recommended or booked.

The You Review is a proper assessment, in which your provider will look at your face at rest and in motion, listen to what you want, and put together a personalized plan that fits your goals and your anatomy. They’ll explain what they’re recommending and why, walk through pricing before anything is agreed, and tell you honestly if something you’re asking for isn’t the right approach for your face.

There is no obligation to proceed on the day. Many first-time clients use the You Review to gather information and come back when they’re ready. That’s exactly what it’s there for.

In many cases, you can have your consultation and treatment in the same appointment if you decide to proceed. Your provider will let you know what’s possible when you come in.

Conservative dosing and the OT philosophy

Unnatural-looking results are often the result of inappropriate product selection, excessive treatment, or poor technique rather than the treatments themselves. It’s not an argument against Botox and filler, it’s just an argument for choosing your provider carefully.

At OrangeTwist, the approach is precision over volume. Providers use exactly what is needed for a natural, balanced result. For Botox, that means treating for movement rather than against it; softening lines while preserving your ability to raise your eyebrows and show genuine expression. For filler, it means restraint. The goal is subtle enhancement that remains in balance with the rest of the face.

The benchmark the Highland Village team works to: If people notice you look refreshed without being able to say exactly why, that’s a result worth coming back for.

What to expect on treatment day

Once your You Review is done and you’ve decided to proceed, treatment moves quickly. Here’s what the day actually looks like for each:

For Botox

Come in with a clean face. Your provider will mark the injection points and use a very fine needle to deliver small, precise amounts of Botox into the targeted muscles. The whole process takes fifteen to thirty minutes. Most clients describe each injection as a quick pinch that lasts only a second.

Aftercare is straightforward: stay upright for four hours, skip the gym for the rest of the day, and avoid pressing or rubbing the treated areas. Light redness or minor swelling at the injection sites is completely normal and settles quickly. Results begin showing within three to seven days and are fully visible at two weeks.

A few days before your appointment, avoid blood thinners like ibuprofen and aspirin where possible, and hold off on alcohol for twenty-four hours beforehand. That’s it.

For Filler

Your injector will apply a topical numbing cream, and most filler products also contain lidocaine, so the area is comfortable throughout. The injection itself takes thirty to sixty minutes depending on the areas being treated. Results are visible immediately, though swelling will soften the final picture for the first one to two weeks, and that’s when you’ll be able to properly assess your final result.

Expect some mild swelling, possible bruising, and tenderness for twenty-four to seventy-two hours. Use cool compresses, sleep elevated where you can, and avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and heat (saunas, hot yoga) for forty-eight hours. Skip any other facial treatments for two weeks. Skip blood thinners and alcohol in the few days before your appointment to reduce bruising.

Recovery, maintenance and the Allē Program

Neither Botox nor filler requires real downtime. Most clients return to normal activity the same day. The social downtime for Botox is essentially nil – just minor injection-site redness settles within a couple of hours. Filler takes a little longer to settle visually, but most clients are presentable within a day or two.

Botox is typically maintained every three to four months, but many clients find results hold longer with a consistent schedule. Some clients find they can extend the time between appointments after several treatment cycles, although results vary between individuals. Your provider will map a realistic maintenance cadence based on how your results settle.

On the loyalty side: Botox Cosmetic treatments at OrangeTwist are eligible for Allē points. Allē is Allergan’s loyalty program, and since Botox Cosmetic, Juvederm, and several other treatments on the OrangeTwist menu are Allergan products, points stack across visits. Link your Allē account before your You Review and the points accumulate from your first treatment. Ask the Highland Village team about connecting your account when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your specific goals. If you’re primarily thinking about forehead lines, frown lines, or crow’s feet, Botox is the logical starting point. If you’re thinking about lips, cheek volume, or jawline definition, those are filler conversations. Many clients end up doing both over time, as they address different things and work well together. Your provider will give you a clear recommendation at your You Review based on your face and your goals, not a formula.

Mild bruising and tenderness are possible with both treatments, especially filler. They’re not guaranteed, and you can reduce the likelihood by avoiding blood thinners and alcohol for a few days before your appointment. Botox bruising, when it happens, is typically minimal and resolves quickly. Filler bruising can take up to a week to fade, with lip filler most likely to cause temporary swelling. Your provider will tell you what to expect specifically for the areas you’re treating.

Botox at OrangeTwist starts at $12 per unit in Texas. Most first-time clients treat one to three areas. A forehead-plus-frown-lines visit typically uses twenty to forty units; crow’s feet add another twelve to twenty-four. Filler is priced by syringe and varies by area and product. Your provider will walk through pricing clearly at your You Review. There will be no surprises, and no pressure to add areas you didn’t come in for. Financing is available through CareCredit, Allē Cherry, and PatientFi if you want to spread the cost.

For Botox: skip the gym on the day of treatment, then return to your normal workout routine the following day.

For filler: avoid strenuous exercise for forty-eight hours to minimize swelling and bruising. Light walking is fine for both. If you have a workout class scheduled on treatment day, just plan to take it easy or book your appointment for after.

For Botox: results are temporary. If you’re unhappy, your provider can sometimes make a small adjustment once results have fully settled at around fourteen days. If not, the product wears off naturally over three to four months. Nothing is permanent.

For filler: hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible. OrangeTwist providers carry hyaluronidase on-site, which can dissolve the filler if needed. Most providers wait two weeks for swelling to settle before assessing the result. Either way, bring your feedback back to your Highland Village provider, and they will help you with next steps.
