What are dermal fillers and how do they work?
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance the body produces naturally. When injected into specific areas of the face, they restore volume, smooth lines, and refine contours by sitting in the layer of skin where the body’s own hyaluronic acid has thinned over time.
Different filler products are designed for different jobs. Softer formulations sit closer to the surface for lip enhancement and fine lines. Denser, more structural formulations work deeper to rebuild cheekbones, jawline, and chin definition. At OrangeTwist, we use Juvéderm as our lead brand, alongside RHA, Restylane, and Versa products selected for the specific job your provider is doing.
Because hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible, the treatment is one of the most controllable in aesthetic medicine. If a result is not quite right, your provider can dissolve the filler with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. That single fact is why this is one of the most forgiving injectables on the menu.

Your provider will examine your face, listen to your goals, and walk through what fillers can and cannot achieve.
They will recommend specific products and amounts, and walk through pricing transparently. No pressure to proceed on the day.
Before treatment
Avoid blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E for a few days before your appointment where possible.
Skip alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. Avoid intensive workouts the morning of. Come in with a clean face. Eat beforehand. Hydrate.
What’s involved
Your provider will mark the injection points and apply a topical numbing cream. Most filler products also contain lidocaine, which makes the injections themselves more comfortable. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the areas being treated. Most clients find the spicy end manageable.

What happens next?
Expect some swelling, mild bruising, and tenderness for 24 to 72 hours. Use cool compresses, sleep elevated, and avoid pressure on the treated area for 24 hours. Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, and heat exposure (saunas, hot yoga) for the first 24 to 48 hours. Your provider will share specific aftercare for your treatment areas.

Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water in the skin. When injected, the filler adds immediate volume and supports the surrounding tissue. Different products are formulated with different thicknesses for different jobs: softer fillers for lip enhancement, denser fillers for structural areas like cheeks and jawline.
Botox and filler do two different things. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. Filler adds or restores volume beneath the skin. Botox is best for dynamic wrinkles formed by repeated facial movement. Filler is better suited to static lines, volume loss, and contouring. Many clients use both together.
Juvéderm is a family of hyaluronic acid filler products made by Allergan, the same company that makes Botox. The range includes JUVÉDERM Voluma for cheek and jawline volume, Vollure and Volbella for lines and lip enhancement, and Ultra and Ultra Plus for additional lip and facial contouring. Your provider will select the right product for the area being treated.
RHA (Resilient Hyaluronic Acid) is a newer family of fillers designed to move with the face, making them particularly suitable for the lips and lower face. Some clients find RHA delivers a more natural feeling during facial expression. Your provider will recommend the right product based on your goals.
Restylane is another family of hyaluronic acid fillers, including Restylane Kysse for lips, Restylane Lyft for cheeks, and Restylane Defyne and Refyne for moderate lines. OrangeTwist providers select across the major HA filler families based on the specific job at hand.

Let your provider know about any medications you are taking, previous cosmetic injections, known allergies, cold sore history (especially for lip filler), autoimmune conditions, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The more your provider knows, the better the plan.
Pricing depends on the products selected and the volume needed. Filler is typically priced by syringe, and the number of syringes varies by treatment area and your goals. Used conservatively, no. Used excessively over many years, repeated overfilling can affect tissue. This is one reason OrangeTwist’s approach favors restraint over volume, and why your provider will discuss long-term maintenance honestly at your You Review.
For the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment: avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot environments; do not apply pressure to or massage the treated areas; avoid alcohol; sleep on your back, elevated, where possible; and hold off on facials, lasers, or any procedure on the treated area for two weeks.
Mild swelling typically peaks at 24 to 48 hours and settles over the next several days. Bruising, when it occurs, usually fades within a week. Lip filler tends to swell most dramatically. Tear trough and cheek filler may swell longer. Your provider will share what to expect for your specific treatment.
Light walking is fine. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and anything that increases blood pressure or heat to the face for 24 hours after treatment. Return to your normal routine after 48 hours.
Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup to treated areas, especially for lip filler where injection points need time to seal. Apply gently when you do. Avoid pressing or massaging.

Filler is generally not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, have an active skin infection in the treatment area, have certain autoimmune conditions, or have an active cold sore outbreak (for lip filler). Always disclose your full medication and health history at your You Review.
Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites, all of which resolve within days. Rare side effects include lumps, asymmetry, or, very rarely, vascular complications. Choosing a properly trained provider is the single most important factor in reducing risk.
