What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a pen-style device of fine, sterile needles to create thousands of tiny channels in the skin’s upper layers. At OrangeTwist Tustin we use SkinPen, the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA and among the most studied available. Its depth adjusts as the provider works, so one session can treat firmer, scarred areas and delicate ones at the settings each needs.
How Microneedling Works
Each channel reads as a tiny, controlled injury, and the skin answers by sending in growth factors and rebuilding collagen and elastin to repair it. Across the following weeks that fresh structure firms and smooths the surface from below, which is what softens scarring and refines texture over time. The channels close within hours, so the skin around them stays intact and recovery stays short.

Preparation
Step back from retinols and strong exfoliants for a few days, and arrive with clean skin where you can. Numbing cream goes on first and needs about 20 minutes to settle, which keeps the treatment comfortable. Mention any cold-sore history so your provider can plan around it.
The Treatment
Your provider works the SkinPen across the area in even, overlapping passes, adjusting depth zone by zone, and presses a hydrating or growth-factor serum in as they go. Most clients describe a light, prickly buzz, more spicy than sore. The active treatment runs about 30 minutes, longer if the neck or chest is included.
Aftercare
For about 24 hours the skin looks flushed and feels warm and tight, like a mild sunburn. Keep it simple: gentle cleanser, the aftercare serums you take home, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, which earns its place year-round here. Hold off on makeup, hard workouts, and active skincare for a day or two while it settles.

Numbing cream goes on first, so most clients feel a light, prickly buzz rather than pain. The neck and chest can read a little more spicy. Tell your provider if anything is too much and they will ease the depth.

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is drawn from a small sample of your own blood and applied during microneedling to amplify the collagen response. It is offered at our Tustin center as an upgrade to standard SkinPen.
